Epiphany at the River

On April 21, 2006, I was at Narrow Passage Creek with Dylan, a boy that I was mentoring at the time.  We were skipping rocks for an hour or so, and I began to wander further from the water’s edge to find “good” rocks.  I can really skip a rock far and well, given the proper rock.  Dylan, meanwhile, stayed beside the river throwing whatever rock in that he could find.  Whatever one he looked down and saw, he threw it in, believing that every rock he threw could be his best one yet.  I commented to him, “I think I am running out of good ones, I have to come way back here to find them.”  He responded, “See, you are going way back there, but I am staying right here and finding lots of good ones.”  And that got me thinking.  God works more like Dylan when He chooses.  He doesn’t wander around, looking for “good ones” to use.  He stands right by the water’s edge and picks up every rock and skips it, regardless of shape, size, color, etc., believing that each one He has picked up has the potential to be “the best one yet.”  Aren’t we lucky that he doesn’t choose the way I do?
